Zwolle win the European cup

In a defensive European cup final, Zwolle got their hands on the title due to a David Stevenson left-foot whack.

In a game of low creativity and second-half time-wasting, Stevenson received the ball from a short corner in the 79th minute, turned his man and hit the ball into the top corner of the net, giving Verruschi no chance to be anywhere near it.

Rodriguez slipping as Stevenson turned didn't assist Reggina, but he may not have been able to stop the shot anyway.

The game looked as though it was heading for extra-time, and probably even penalties, until that moment. After that, it gave Zwolle an excuse to keep stopping the game with substitutions and niggly fouls until the final whistle blew.

In fairness, the first half did at least have some chances, even if they weren't clear-cut, before the 2nd half got bogged down in defensive duties. Had one of them gone in then, it should have livened up proceedings, but the fact that only 2 of them were on target tells a story. Zwolle only actually had 3 shots on target in the whole game (by the goalscorer Henderson) and one at the very end of the game should have been taken, as Reggina got ever more desperate in their pushing forward.

Commiserations to Reginna who have now lost the European Cup final 6 times, including 3 of the last 4 seasons. They will be back to try again next season.

Congratulations to PEC Zwolle on their third European title!
