Clube Desportivo das Aves victorious!

Despite being recent Europa Cup winners and having an excellent season, Tenerife will have to wait longer to win the big European competition after Clube Desportivo das Aves were the more clinical side in Season 28's final.

It has been a frustrating final couple of weeks for Tenerife as only a week ago, they were in with a chance of winning a rare treble within Mystify Soccer. It seems that, at the very worst moment, their form has slipped to deny them 2 of the 3 trophies. This poor form didn't affect their Spanish league title as they wrapped that up relatively easily and have been able to afford a couple of slip ups. In the cup competitions, it has been costly with Real Betis capitalising for the Spanish cup and now Portuguese side Clube Desportivo das Aves grabbing the European Cup title.

Enough about Tenerife though, this was a thoroughly disciplined performance by Aves who kept their heads when Tenerife kept coming at them.

Tenerife started the game on top and should have taken the lead early on when they hit the after from a well worked move. Andreas Köpke then snatched at a couple of half chances before Aves came into the game a little. Nicolas Wanet used this time to effectively win the trophy, first heading in from a cross by Petrovic and then sweetly striking the ball with his left foot when played through by captain Tom Evans.

As the game went on, the frustration of the Tenerife players became more and more telling with panicked shots and lapses of concentration. Less than half of their chances actually found the target and, with a bit more composure, they would possibly have clawed their way back into the match.

In the end the patience showed by Aves when defending earned several counter attacks which enabled Gilles Giuliano to break forward into space regularly and eventually claim a third goal. This finished Tenerife off and it was hard not to feel for their supporters after a season with plenty of joy.

Clube Desportivo das Aves were by no means one of the favourites at the start of the tournament but kept doing just enough to qualify through the groups and then defeated big favourites Walsall in the semi final to give them a chance which they have taken with both hands so a big congratulations to the management team. Hopefully they will manage to qualify for the European Cup next season so they can defend their title.
