However, I've 'cleaned up' the layout of the web site this week in order to give more room on all pages and give a slight performance boost by removing some excess code.

The extra room has been gained by losing the right hand panel. It's something I have wanted to do for a while as the data on there was mainly pointless - it wasn't even on every page anyway. The data that was on there can still be found on the site and hopefully in places it is needed. I'm not quite sure what I originally wanted the right panel for now but that's irrelevant now.

You'll notice the 'quick links' that used to be on the right hand side near the bottom (and thus probably never used) is now a little more prominent and only on the screen after signing in and they are now more relevant to your team, so it will take you to your league results rather than just the English league as it previously did.

Also, I've tried to give similar functions/layout within the site the same look and feel now. There were a few that I'd developed over differing periods and forgotten to match up so you may find buttons have been moved around to accommodate this. You should still find everything easily though - it's not like I've actually moved controls to different pages!

The biggest change you may notice is the tabs within sections. Previously there were some options at the top and some at the bottom, depending on the page you were looking at. Part of my standardisation has been to clean all this up so that they all look the same and tabs will now separate sections from now on.

Having the tabs means I can add more features over the next few years without worrying about where to put links or extending the left hand menu. I can possibly even remove some of the current left hand option and merge them into others should I feel the need. At least then the navigation is either menu or tabs - nice and simple for everyone!

The extra space will obviously assist in giving me greater scope for displaying details. I haven't changed any pages too dramatically as yet - I've just made sure they look OK given the wider area. However, when I sporadically re-visit pages from now on, I have options to work with. I've previously found myself squashing things together or removing the right hand panel anyway. You may find a right hand panel appearing on some pages in the future but it will be for information related to that page only and not a global one.

I've probably forgotten most of the amendments I have made but, as usual, let me know if you find anything that looks strange - I've tested it all in most browsers but not every one - there are far too many these days! Although you can ignore that last sentence if you are still using Internet Explorer 6 as I've decided it isn't worth the extra code required to support it. Previously I've tried to make it work in that but, as everyone, including me, has wanted it killed off for years due to its buggy rendering, I've now given up supporting it. If you use that or even IE7, then I suggest you upgrade. IE8 isn't perfect but it's a lot better than the previous ones.

I know some of you access the site on your phones as well - I've not yet got round to doing a full blown mobile site as that would be a big job but I'm certainly a step nearer to being able to now I have lost the right panel. I am hoping I'll never have to though and screens just get bigger and bigger!

Finally, the eagle eyed will spot a new feature I'm attempting to implement for next season.... and I won't be explaining how it calculates.

Transfer fee negotiation

I've just updated the site to provide the functionality to negotiate a transfer fee.

This does NOT include players involved in a swap deal so you can't go back and request their best player instead of the one that was originally offered. You can only negotiate the actual fee. If an offer is made involving a player you don't want then you just have to reject it and perhaps negotiate via mail.

My guess is that most players offered in swap have either been sorted out beforehand or are one of a few players that are willing to be swapped and letting negotiations go backwards and forwards whilst the receiving manager keeps changing the player they want are not how I want it to work. Most transfers in the real world don't involve swaps anyway.

To assist with this, I've also changed the cancel, reject and accept transfer mail messages to be sent from the team involved so you can reply to them directly. For the next update I shall do the same to the loan messages.

I've also tweaked the match report to try and make sure colours are indeed different for each team, although this is not actually that easy to do when the colours are very similar (different shades of blue for example). If you spot any match reports where the team colours aren't that obviously different then please let me know.

General update

I've now uploaded the tactic scout changes mentioned yesterday so you can employ scouts to investigate whichever teams you like. As usual, if you find any bugs in this then let me know.

I've also made a change to the match report page so that the team colours assist you on the match timeline. Well, they will providing the colours of the teams involved are quite different. Slight variations in colour may not actually help that much but I figure it's better than nothing.

Regarding yesterday's post - I think a few people related most of it to a Chesterfield v Walsall English cup game that ended with a bizarre scoreline. It was actually only partly related to that. I don't agree that results like that particular one should actually happen. Lower division teams should be able to win but rarely by that much and I have made some modifications to the match engine in this respect. I do believe Chesterfield were the correct victors but they scored more than I think they should have done. Replaying them all causes more problems than just leaving them, especially as the winners were correct.

Also regarding yesterday's post - I don't recall saying exactly how important tactics were to a game, just that they may POSSIBLY be more important than you think. I'm obviously not going to state how involved - just don't rule them out as insignificant.

My next change has already been done and will be uploaded with the next updates - that is the ability for you to modify what you are asking for players on the transfer list without deleting and then re-submitting the player. As you may have gathered, this just continues to lower a players' morale. Allowing modifications will mean morale isn't affected - unless you put a player for sale after they were previously on loan that is.

Finally, I've asked this before but if any of you fancy writing articles about the game (your league, team, country or anything else relevant to Mystify), then by all means mail them to me. I'd be very happy to put them into the news articles on the site. I'd definitely like to see an article for each country on a regular basis.

Tactic scouting

I'm pretty sure managers don't realise how influential tactics are in Mystify Soccer. This is because I get bug reports from managers asking how on earth they have lost a certain game and when I look into it I tend to find nothing too badly wrong.

Admittedly, there are instances where I do find errors in the game engine and even though there hasn't been anything major for quite a while I still want people to question it in case there are future issues. I'm constantly developing the game and, as such, problems may continue to randomly appear. Most changes these days are minor tweaks but it only needs me to have forgotten a certain aspect for that minor tweak to open up a whole load of issues.

Anyway, I think a lot of managers just remember the old match engine where the best rated team tended to win regardless of most other aspects. This new engine will take a lot more into consideration than you've maybe even thought of, all relevant to varying degrees. This includes captain selection, form, bits of luck and loads more that I don't want to mention. I can even think of a few that I'd be impressed at if somebody thought of them.

Tactics also do play a part, possibly a bigger part than you think. There also isn't a set of tactics that will always work as certain ones can be countered with others. They also need to work well with your team line up. For example, setting an attacking team with 6 defenders is probably going to give you a disadvantage. Again, I don't want to give examples as that spoils it but don't fall into the trap of thinking you should have won because you had the best 11 players in terms of skills alone.

It's only a few weeks ago though that I realised you actually have no visibility of the other teams' tactics. One of my plans is to inform a manager after the game, how the other manager played against them - after all, they should have seen that for themselves. Before I do that I'm just finalising a scouting system for other teams' tactics. I'm hoping this will be with you tomorrow and then you can see how other teams are playing before you meet them. It's up to you to manage this scouting though.

Another slight improvement I will be implementing at the same time is regarding the links to players in the transfer list or pool. They currently just take you to the first page of the relevant list. I've altered this so that you will go to the page that the player is on.

You've possibly also noticed that both the pool and list can be sorted by the date players were added now too.

Deadline extended for tonight

I've just extended the deadline for tonight's games to be 7pm.

That's because I uploaded some significant back end changes earlier this afternoon and forgot to re-enable the site! I've given myself a red card.

The changes were just regarding database connections within the transfer system and shouldn't have actually changed anything as far as you are concerned.

It's just a technical change as when transfers/loans are occurring a lot needs to be checked and processed and a failure at any of the individual stages could leave the process in limbo where some work has been done but not others.

I've just tried to clean things up so either everything runs or nothing (and an error occurs). In all fairness, database connection errors are rare but I still need to cover them. Whilst doing this work I've also attempted to change it so that less connections occur and the site runs more smoothly because of this.

If that all makes no sense, don't worry about it. I'm hoping my next change(s) will be something less technical and something you can understand.

Loan & transfer rejections

I've just updated the site yet again with some more tweaks.

All but one minor and some are just code cleaning exercises to assist me. However, the 1 non-minor one involves rejections of loan and transfer offers. You can now specify a reason which will be relayed back to the manager.

I'm pretty sure I have missed out reasons though so please mail me any thoughts you have on the options that should be there. I'll then make the appropriate updates so the system can be even more informative.

General update

I've updated the site a few times over the last few days now. Unfortunately when I do it, it will kick you out of the site and in some cases it will give you screen errors until I've done my updates. There's not lot I can do about that.

Apologies if this annoys any of you. I do try and do it when there are no managers on site but sometimes, like bug fixes, I prefer to get the changes implemented ASAP. If it helps then I guarantee each time it happens there are either bug fixes, changes to prepare for new functionality or indeed new functions themselves. I don't just do it for minor things and as I've been doing lots of 'improvements' recently, I've had to keep putting the updates live. It may happen more over the next week or so depending on how my free time goes.

The most recent change isn't actually a change in functionality but a change in the transfer screens to give you better visibility of why a transfer or loan can't happen. You'll see a series of tick boxes now that display all possible reasons for failure. In a few of the instances, you can't actually make the request in the first place but I figured displaying all the reasons can only help. When doing this, I've also let the system actually allow more transfer/loan requests in the first place. Previously they were being blocked for things like not having enough players but now they can be submitted - they just can't be accepted until the 'fault' is resolved. This should give managers more help overall.

These pages will also give me scope for adding extra 'things' to the transfer system. I won't give anything away here because I don't want to put too much pressure on myself to program them quickly. Needless to say the layout of the pages may well change in the future. They look quite basic at the moment because I wanted to get them into play quickly and let them bed in for a little while - despite there being nothing majorly different for you to look at, I actually re-coded the whole 'transfer validation' system so that the same procedures are used for each validation now. Previously I'd written them all separately so one function was used on request, another to display warnings and another upon accepting. If I ever need to add extra checks it should now be much easier and with the 'tickbox' system, it should give you more transparency. I just need to hope there are no bugs over the next day or two.

The Extra Teams seem to be working OK. I know a few are waiting to be accepted but, as I said before, I'm accepting them slowly so I can monitor it. I am, however, deciding who to accept based on how long they have been a manager and what team they have selected for their second team. I actually want some new managers as well so some of the more popular names may take a while before I accept for a second team. If you want to change your choice now I've said this then please drop me a message.

Player bonus & top players

As you can probably guess, I'm in the mood and have some spare time to actually work on the game at the moment so things are being added and altered here and there quite quickly in comparison to normal.

The 'multiple team' task was a tricky one for me but it has been completed now so I will slowly be approving secondary teams over the week.

Whilst completing this, two little items have also been added. Some of you have noticed them already. One is a list of the top players per division and the other is the facility to give your players a bonus.

I'll leave you to establish how the top players is worked out but the latter is only there to improve a players morale. It will only work to a certain level though.

When new features are added I do change the rules to include them so this should probably be your first thought rather than mailing me.

Oh and I've also set the system to star out certain expletives that certain managers unfortunately feel the need to use.

Transfers and squad limits

An incident this weekend involving two transfers for £0 has led me to find a bug that has been in the system for a while.

The transfer system checks squad sizes to see if they should be allowed or not. What it wasn't doing was taking swap deals into consideration when it should have been, because if it's a swap deal then, of course, squad sizes don't change.

I have reversed the two transfers now as they were done due to the bug and later today I will be uploading the fix to the transfer system.

In terms of swap deals I have also seen one or two comments regarding increasing the number of players allowed in swap deals. I am not going to do this for 2 reasons. The first minor one is because I don't believe real life has too many deals including several players at once and secondly, this would open up more cheating. There is a limit to the number of transfers teams can do with each other and allowing deals to involve multiple swaps would kind of negate that check.

Transfer pool bug

Just a quick message to apologise for the transfer pool failing this week.

No bids were taken into consideration because I had screwed up the code. I had to change it so that managers with more than 1 team could not successfully bid for players at their other team.

It looks like I got it wrong. It has now been fixed for next week but I can't re-run the bids for last week now so apologies to anybody who bid or who had players on there.

2nd team applications

I'm almost in a position to give more managers access to having a secondary team. Due to this I have opened up the application for them so you can start applying. However, don't expect approval until I'm happy that the system is ready for managers to have two teams. You'll know when that is because I will start approving them. I have added 'secondary team' information to the rules and will finalise them before I start approvals.

I still have 1 or 2 things to finalise first and I am pretty sure I'll have changes to make once I've launched it as I'm changing one of the most fundamental aspects of the game since it was started. The whole game has always been on the basis of 1 team per manager and thus the whole engine had been built with this in mind since day 1 (about 15 years ago!) As such, every aspect of the site needed looking at. However, the managers trialling it for me have had all their reported faults looked at (so far) though so I'm hopeful that I'm nearly there with it and can open it up fully soon.

If you do get approved for a secondary team then please let me know ASAP if you find any problems. I intend to approve managers in small batches to start with just in case I've missed anything with my code changes so far.

On another note, I've had a lot of suggestions of new features over the last week or so. I'm pleased about this as it gives me more to ponder. However, as I've also been spending the evenings trying to complete the changes required so you can have an extra team, all I've been able to do is keep adding the suggestions to my list of prospective future developments. If I reply and tell you this is what I have done it is because I have and not because I'm not into your suggestion and have binned it. If I don't like it, I'll just tell you.

Admittedly, when I come to look at the idea properly it may get rejected. This is either because I've changed my mind in the time it has been on the list or, more likely, because the idea is no longer relevant due to other changes in the game. My list has actually still got ideas on from several years ago including a lot of mine - I'm hopeful that I will get to them all eventually but any suggestions could take years to come in just because the list is so long. All of them are appreciated though so don't feel offended if they aren't high on my list of priorities - some of them need a lot of work so get lower priority as I need to have enough free time in a batch to look at these, not because they are poor ideas.

I did once contemplate putting a list of the ideas on the site but I decided against it because some never happen, some happen in different ways and some I'd liek to surprise you with.

Secondary teams

Please don't get too excited by the title of this article. It's still in the early stages.

I've had a few good ideas sent to me about other aspects of the game recently that I've had to say I can't implement yet due to working on something a bit more fundamental. This, of course, is the option to give some managers a 2nd team and I thought I should give you all more details.

You have possibly seen the new 'Managers Office' page now and, apart from the longest serving manager statistic, you may be thinking it's a bit of a pointless page. However, this page will be used with the 2nd team functionality. I also have another plan for it but I'll say no more on that for now as I need to concentrate on 2nd teams for the time being.

As it's such a big change there is a the possibility that the site will have the odd problem. There was one night a few days ago where managers couldn't sign in which I think was actually unrelated. However, I can't rule it out as the changes being made affect most aspects. If you notice any issues then please let me know of them.

As it is such a big change I don't want to develop it all and then just launch it only to have several problems to fix at once. I need to do it a bit more cautiously and so I have decided to do this with the assistance of some managers. I'm hoping this way will also enable me to bring it to the rest of you more quickly.

I have asked 3 or 4 managers to help me with this already due to the fact they have helped me previously with other ideas/problems in the game so I do not need volunteers. I know several of you would like to be involved but please don't mail me asking if you can now assist. Having too many 'testers' will actually slow me down so if you can be patient then I'll try and do the full implementation as quickly as possible. I may possibly ask other managers to help test towards the end but I'll see how the work goes first.

You will see these managers around the site and their manager page will show their extra teams. Please don't hassle them for information as I've asked them to keep certain aspects quiet. Especially bits that aren't finalised yet.

Once I have done this work I shall be cracking down on people I already suspect to have more than 1 team. If you mail me over the next few weeks with honesty as to which teams you have then I shall set you up with these teams as secondary ones properly. If you don't then I shall just be removing you from the game.

Finally, a very minor change - has anybody noticed substitute appearances are now displayed for players?

Extra updates

I have added 3 extra changes to the game this weekend. Neither of them anywhere near major.

The first one is something for me and that is an e-mail verification step upon application for the game. That means you now have to click a link on an e-mail before your application can be confirmed.

This is just because I only find out an e-mail address is invalid once I have assigned a team (and their e-mail bounces back) and I then have to go and release the manager straight away. If this person received a team that others had applied for then the other applications would be deleted unless they had selected other teams as well, meaning I could inadvertently lose applications. This new step means I am only getting applications with valid addresses. I'm amazed at how many people don't actually know their e-mail addresses!

The second change is just a bit of fun where the weather is now on your match report.

The 3rd change, for now, is that you can now see your sent mail for the last 2 weeks. I don't want to build a full on mail management system so it is a simplistic addition but it will show you weather the mail has been read or not. You can also work out if it has been deleted because you can't delete it from your sent items until the recipient has. This is just because I don't want to let the database get too large by duplicating messages.

Also on the mail, I have added a check box to select all the messages at once should you want to delete en masse.

Hopefully these mail changes will come in handy for some of you.

Minor updates

I've had a few minutes this week to read the message board and picked up one or two requests for improvements which I have tried to implement. There have been some good ideas.

I have made a tweak to penalties in the game engine as more were being missed than scored which is blatantly not right.

I have also added the value of transfer bids to rejection messages so that you can see what you bid.

Finally, I have changed the players wanted page to list the most recent additions first followed by the rest. I have also added the date of creation to each record. Unfortunately I didn't have this information for the data already posted so it was set to the date I did the job. From now on though you should see entries added in the last week at the top ordered by their created date and then the older data. There was a request to actually delete the older data but I felt it wasn't always fair and managers should really be deleting it when they remember. My solution of displaying the created dates at least gives managers a view as to how recent it is regardless of the manager remembering to do this or not. I have just seen my logic in the code isn't quite right in terms of the ordering so I will fix this for the next update.

Please try mailing ideas to me in future though because I only get chance to properly read the board every now and again - normally I just scan through it for any abuse that needs deleting.

I've not really got into the nitty gritty regarding multiple teams yet. I made quite a few big changes just before Christmas and felt I should let them settle in and catch any bugs before causing new ones.

There may be more little changes done over the next few days before I look to get stuck into the next serious changes.

Player Morale

Player morale has now been implemented in the extra areas I wanted it to be.

I'm not going to provide specifics as that's for you all to work out. However it hasn't been a huge change from how it was originally set up so you shouldn't worry too much. There's certainly nothing major been changed. Morale will now just be affected in minor ways in a few more areas.

I shall be looking at multiple management next but I'll wait until the new season has been processed before starting that.

Game update

I just thought I'd post a quick update as to where I'm at and what I'm working on.

I made a change recently to weaken unmanaged teams a bit more than they already were. I've based this change on tactics and not the teams' player skills. My thinking is that the player will be just as good under no manager but the team will be weaker having no direction. Without going into the details of the match engine, this may not make much sense but it's the best way I can think of explaining it. As usual, this will take a little while to settle in and I'll monitor it over the next season.

My next 2 tasks are regarding morale and multiple management. Player morale has never actually been implemented properly but this is what I am working on at the moment. I need to make it so that every player has the right morale at the right time - at the moment it's been implemented a bit haphazardly - I put it into sections where I remembered it. I just need to go through the whole game and make sure its set correctly in all relevant aspects.

The 2nd task I want to do is enable the game so managers can manage more than 1 team. This isn't as straightforward as you'd think because, besides disabling transfers in certain situations, I need to alter the core functionality of the web site in terms of signing in and page access. I'll start looking at this after the Morale though.

Merry Christmas!

I'd just like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and hope you have a great time over the holiday period.

Mystify will be running over the break but timings of matches may change slightly due to my own commitments. Keep an eye on the site which I will keep up-to-date with next match times.

Just to update you with the game. I am currently working on a couple of things. One is to get player morale sorted (which I need to do before player contracts) and the other is to let certain managers manage more than 1 team - I say certain as I'll need it trialled. It may eventually be open to all. I need to put some restrictions in for transfers first.

Things do progress with me, sometimes a bit too slow for my liking.

If you had a cup game, the reminder was coming but giving you the date of your next league match instead.

It's been a very quick fix but it must have been a bug in the game for ages. I'm glad somebody has finally pointed it out.

I'm hoping nobody has actually missed picking a team for their cup match because of this. Although, there's not a lot I can do if that has happened.

It has been corrected for future e-mails anyway.

Player Injuries

I've just had a bug pointed out to me regarding player injuries.

The original injury as specified in the mail is actually the correct injury a player received. However, the player was being stored with the wrong injury code for display on the player pages throughout the site.

I have now fixed the initial bug of storing the correct injury and attempted to correct all current injuries to what they should be, although this latter change may not be right for all injuries. However, I hope I've got over 90% of them.

Now, over time they will be correct. Needless to say the weeks and original injury are what the game is going off and not what has been displayed in the player details.

Apologies for that - I hate bugs.

Timelines improved

I have finally managed to add extra data to the match report timeline so you should now see who has had all your shots and at what times they occurred, along with any bookings and sending-off's.

Please bear in mind the match engine is constantly being tweaked at the moment because I'm not 100% happy with it yet. This extra timeline data should actually assist me with the tweaking and I wasn't going to put it live for you all to see for a while yet but I've decided there's no harm in it and you can at least see how the games are going a bit better than previously.

At the end of this season I may well delete the extra data for this season from the database and have a clean start from week 1 next season just to give the timeline some logic in that it hasn't started half way through a season.

Incidentally, if you can think of any better images for a missed shot or a save then I'm open to ideas - just drop me a mail.

Another little change I have made is to state the player's injury on the squad availability page and the player's own information page along with the number of weeks out. This is obviously not a huge change but I thought it would be a nice addition.

Finally, a change that won't affect any of you currently playing (unless you change teams) but managers taking over new teams will have their finances reset to an equal level. It means new managers won't be taking over clubs with huge bank accounts or ones in debt which I know can be unfair. Now I'm monitoring manager movement more, I think this is a good thing. I'm hoping in the future to reset the players for a team in this scenario also.

My next task is to let the timeline bed in a little - there are a couple of things I am still contemplating adding - and then I am possibly going to start looking at player contracts. That should be fun!
