Woluwe-Zaventem victorious!

KV Woluwe-Zaventem flew the flag for Belgium in today's European cup final.

The victory gave the country their second ever European cup triumph following on from Beerschot in season 20.

France, meanwhile, are still awaiting their first European Cup title after Montpellier strugged to break down a stubborn Woluwe-Zaventem 5 man defence.

Montpellier went into the final as firm favourites with a stronger European pedigree behind them but from the first minute, it was Woluwe-Zaventem looking the most likely to create a chance. Their cause was helped by Rod McDonald giving the ball away cheaply in dangerous areas twice in the first 10 minutes. Thankfully for him, Michel Vercruysse and then goalkeeper Steve Berger were on hand to take possession back.

Once the game settled down after an entertaining start, it was a relatively flat performance from both sides for most of the remainder.

Woluwe-Zaventem took the lead in the 56th minute when leading scorer Gert Stocks headed in a corner and then doubled it 13 minutes later when Tony Sergeant repeated the trick from almost the same spot.

Once Woluwe-Zaventem had scored their second goal Montpellier attempted to speed the game up but kept getting undone by their own petulance and an over fussy referee. In the end it was surprising that only 1 Montpellier player was booked as they become more and more frustrated.

Congratulations to KV Woluwe-Zaventem for winning the European cup in season 27 of Mystify Soccer.
