Dunarea Calaras win the treble!

2 of Mystify Soccer's big-hitters faced on in the European Cup final for season 33. Both AS Monaco and FC Dunarea Calarasi have won the tournament in recent seasons and Dunarea Calarasi were semi-finalists last season.

In addition to recent European success, both teams have already won their national cup competitions and, barring a miraculous goal difference turn-around for AS Monaco, their own national league championship so the hype before the game was about which team would win a treble for the first time since the mighty Hamburg team 15 seasons ago.

Compared to recent tense affairs in the European cup final, this one was a bit more open and the 2 nil scoreline was not as comfortable as it may seem to some. Certainly in the first half, multiple goals could have been scored by either side and Hugo Almeida in the Dunarea Calaras goal was instrumental in keeping Monaco at bay during a 15 minute spell where Monaco fans probably started to suspect it wasn't their day.

Prior to that dominating Monaco spell, it was the opposition who had already caused some damage by earning a couple of corners in the first few minutes and scoring from the 2nd of them after Monaco defender Fraser O'Neill failed to clear the cross properly. It landed on the edge of the box straight with Trond Soltvedt whose low pile-driver found its way into the net past an unsighted Dale McCaffrey.

As stated earlier, this slowly brought on a spell of Monaco attacking where they did everything but score. Ulrich Wilson had the best chances but Fraser O'Neill almost made up for his earlier poor clearance as well but they found Hugo Almeida stopping everything.

Dunarea Calarasi supplied a killer punch to stop this dominance when Michael Hansen & Emanuele Concetti broke forward from a hopeful clearance and the latter finished past McCaffrey with the Monaco defence struggling to get organised.

The game then became very tactical with Monaco unable to exert their previous dominance. Dunarea Calarasi could have had more goals but Monaco's defence was standing firmer - unfortunately they struggled to find many openings themselves until the last ten minutes and even these were from distance as their composure went.

So a 2 nil victory for Dunarea Calarasi over AS Moncao. Both teams will be back in the tournament next season.

Congratulations to Dunarea Calaras now join Airdrieonians, Manchester City and Hamburger SV (3 times) in winning a Mystify treble!
